SALLY BELL’S RELAY AND INDIVIDUAL RESULTS SUMMARY

Please find attached all results and individual splits in our wonderful relays at Worlds.  Apologies in advance if there are any errors… I’ve double checked so hopefully not! In summary, the highlights were:

• 3 bronze medals
• 13 state records and 1 national (and state) record (but one of the state records was rebroken in the next heat)
• 1 team broke the old National Record by 4 seconds but was beaten by an Australian team
• 1 team missed a National Record by 0.5
• 1 team broke the old state record but was beaten by 2 WA teams
• 1 team broke the old state record but was DQd (dodgy)
• 1 team missed a State Record by 0.5s

And there were some amazing split times by ALL swimmers!  Congratulations everyone.  We calculated after the relay day that Claremont now has more than 20 men who can break 30 for a 50 Freestyle (and most of these have swum under 29 seconds). We also have 3 women under 30 seconds.
 
We’ll do a big individual performance summary at a later stage, but here’s a quick run down of our individual medal (1,2,3) and record tally (just from my dodgy memory – and not including the Open Water Swim because as I write this it hasn’t started!):

• 3 Gold medals (Sally Bell (2), 50 Backstroke & 100 Backstroke; Tom Stachewicz (1), 50 Backstroke)
• 3 Silver medals (Anthony Dunne (1), 200 Breaststroke; Dean Stockwell (1), 50 Breaststroke; Sally Bell (1), 200 Backstroke)
• 8 National Records (Tom Stachewicz (4), 50 Freestyle & 100 Freestyle, 50 Backstroke twice; Sally Bell (1), 50 Backstroke; Anthony Dunne (1), 200 Breaststroke; Dean Stockwell (1), 50 Breaststroke; Ross Leighton (1), 50 Freestyle)

and I’ll be mortified if I missed anyone!!!
 
And of course we had numerous 4-10th placings…  Off the top of my head, those who got infuriating 4ths were Sally Stanford (2), Anthony Dunne (2), Sally Bell (1), Sam McLennan (1 or 2?)… and there were no doubt others that I’ve forgotten… Most importantly our swimmers recorded a swag of monumental PBs…. So many performances spring to mind…. But as I said, we’ll do a proper summary in the near future…

Relay Results and Splits (MS Excel 2003 Document)

MEDIA RELEASE – WORLD CHAMPS MEDAL HAUL FOR CLAREMONT

Claremont Masters members brought home 12 medals from the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships held at Challenge Stadium last week.

The club won nine individual medals (3 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze), and 3 Bronze medals in relays.

Local mum Sally Bell won 2 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal in the 45-49 year age group, breaking one National record in the process.  Former WA swimming legend, Tom Stachewicz, won 1 Gold medal in the 40-44 age group, and set a total of 4 National records.

Silver medals were won by Anthony Dunne, in the 45-49 age group, and Dean Stockwell, in the 40-44 age group, both in National record time.

The club’s three individual Bronze medals were won in the three-kilometre Open Water Swim, by Bett Montgomery (55-59), Lesley Meaney (60-64) and Perc Edwards (80-84).

Claremont had a very successful time at the day-long relay competition, breaking no fewer than 13 State records and 1 National record.

The women’s 200-239 relay teams (with an average age of over 50 years) won Bronze medals in both the freestyle and medley relays, with their team of Sally Bell, Lesley Meaney, Sally Stanford and Nicola Corsbie.

The men’s 160-199 relay team (with an average age of over 40 years) won a Bronze medal in the freestyle relay with their team of Tom Stachewicz, Dean Stockwell, Anthony McDonald and John Bowden.

Many other Claremont Masters swimmers gained top 10 placings and a swag of State records, and enjoyed the great competition and international camaraderie on offer at the week-long championships.

After an 8 week semi intensive training program Team Albion felt they were ready to take on the world in the over 35’s Master Waterpolo competition. It was a truly international age group with eight teams aiming to be crowned for the world title. This included teams from Australia (2), Croatia (2) Russia, Romania, Germany, and Singapore.

Our first match was against our local Perth rivals the Musketeers who clearly had the match fitness and team principles required to play at this level. Despite our best efforts we went down 21 v 4. The 2nd game involved the first Croatian team and our first experience of playing a European team. It was a tough ask and we hadn’t settled down as a team yet and ended up losing 21 v 1. There were however some encouraging signs in the game of what we could achieve. In addition we also scored some cool Croatian waterpolo gear that the opposition were very keen to swap. By game 3 against the German team we had settled on our team tactics of scoring in every game and by losing by less than 20 goals. We also decided to play a staggered attack allowing our team a chance to defend the counter attacks (of which there were many) This gave the team the focus and unity it needed and we ended up losing 17 v 3.

By game 4 we felt we had progressed enough to challenge the Singaporean team and took the game to them. We were minus our regular goalkeeper so we substituted with on field players. This effected team depth and we ended up losing the game 9 v 4.

By game 5 we had the challenge of facing the mighty Russians, the eventual age group winners. Despite the score line loss of 17 v 2 this game could be described as our finest moment (quote from Bastiaan de Boer). Penalty saves from our goalkeeper, lobbing of their own goalkeeper and general determined play left the team feeling that we left a positive mark on the competition. None of us could speak Russian but their general body language and emotions during the game indicated we had gently rattled them.

By game 6 it would be fair to the say the puff had gone out of our sails. Battle worn we carried on and in game 6 we lost 18 v1 to the Romanians. Not many highlights but not one player gave up or got de motivated.

Our final game against the 2nd Croatian team had us very excited before the start. With only 10 minutes to go to the start there were only 4 of the opposition evident at the pool. The rest of their team did finally show up and we ended up with a very decent game. By this stage Team Albion were showing positive attacking play which resulted in several evictions (“kick outs”) to the opposition. This was further rewarded by our increased ability to convert to goals and we lost the game 13 v 6. A great result against a top Croatian Team.

That same evening the club had its competition wind up at the Albion Hotel. We discussed many things but the stand outs for us all were:

• Seeing 2 of our own players who had never played serious Waterpolo before compete at an international level and show consistent improvement.
• Having the support from Claremont and others to get us through some particularly tough games.
• Having a crack against the best in the world.

We had some unofficial team awards that night which went to Pete Gardner for most improved player and to Gerry MacQuillan for having the dubious joint title of team top goal scorer and most major fouls against (disputed by Gerry).

Here’s to Sweden 2010…

This article summarises the information that the club wishes to disseminate to its members in relation to the FINA World Masters Championships 2008, being held in Perth at Challenge Stadium from April 15-25.

These entries must be in by Friday March 14 and your entry number then emailed to Sally Bell (ua.moc.u4null@las). You will see a paragraph in your post-registration email looking something like this:

Sally will be sending out a separate reminder and follow-up on this but please make her life easier and get your info to her so we don’t have to chase you up. Most important thing is to get your event entries done.

Waterpolo

Team Albion is planning to enter a team in the FINA World Masters Waterpolo competiton. Age group is 35+. The “youngest” player must have turned 35 by the end of December 08. As we overlap with the “Gropers” (we are all current members!) we are looking for “Groper” recruits to potentially boost the team. If anyone is interested in playing please e-mail/phone Gerry MacQuillan (Team Coach/Captain and Manager!) on 0422 090 355 or at moc.liamtohnull@nalliuqcamyrreg with your prior waterpolo “experience” and desire to play. No pressure.

Training Friday March 14 6.30am Claremont Pool (Davies Rd, Claremont). The deadlines are getting close.

Dates:

Preliminary rounds Thursday 17th to Wednesday 23rd April (includes over the weekend)
Finals Thursday 24th April. No game times as yet.

Games played at Challenge Stadium, Claremont Pool, UWA and Bicton Waterpolo Pool (near the Baths).
Round Robin Format.
Up to 15 team members.
Players must be over 35 on the 31st of December 08. We will be playing in the male 35+ age group.

All competitors must be a member of a club (masters, swimming, waterpolo etc). Membership at Claremont Masters can be arranged. $85-$95 AUD approx. All competitors (in any event) must register individually $67 AUD: DEADLINE 23rd March 08. That is also the team deadline so I would like to set the individual deadline as the 16th of March (a week earlier).

Please provice Gerry with proof of registration.

The team must register $400 AUD per team.
If we do not supply a referee we also pay $400 AUD per team.
Assuming no referee that is $800 PER TEAM. If we have 15 players thats 800/15= $50 DOLLARS approx (to play).
Balls and caps are supplied for the games.

Please note: The team must be registered and entered by 23 March 2008.
